UK MPs: Aid improved but not reaching the world’s poorest
The effectiveness of European Commission (EC) aid has improved considerably during the past ten years, according to the UK International Development Committee.
In a report issued today, the Committee said EC aid can offer clear added value in international development cooperation because of its scale, geographic reach and its commitment to poverty eradication, good governance and human rights.
However, MPs on the committee found that too much EU development aid is going to middle income countries, like Turkey and Serbia. They are calling on the UK Government to press for funding to be diverted, away from higher middle income countries bordering Europe, to give greater help to the poorest people in the world.
