BetterAid urges G8 to commit to full transparency in Deauville
The BetterAid CSO platform has urged the G8 nations to commit to full aid transparency at the Deauville summit this week. Aid transparency has been identified as a particular area of concern and the coalition of more than 1000 civil society organisations has stated the importance of sending “a strong political message to the Fourth High-Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness that takes place later this year.” (Better Aid Press Release)
BetterAid say that the G8 should ensure “democratic ownership and full transparency in development cooperation in line with previous commitments.” (Better Aid Press Release)
The G8 has been accused recently of deliberately hiding shortfalls in meeting annual aid target commitments made at Gleneagles in 2005 by failing to take the impact of inflation into account. Their annual Accountability Report which was released earlier this week states that the G8 is on a renewed path of transparency; Publish What You Fund hopes that these new commitments begin to translate into action.
