Aid transparency in Africa Report 2010
‘Still Our Common Interest: Commission for Africa Report 2010’ was published on Monday 13th September to examine what has happened since the 2005 report, ‘Our Common Interest’ which set out measures for the creation of a strong and prosperous Africa.
Although the 2005 report included little mention of aid transparency, the 2010 report acknowledges this and makes an urgent recommendation that, “African governments should take steps to increase transparency and accountability. Donors, including international NGOs, should provide appropriate support in these areas and to strengthen African civil society’s ability to hold governments to account.” P.60
The report also concludes that “improving the transparency of aid is essential to hold donors accountable for keeping their promises and for recipient governments’ planning and accountability to their people. Partners to the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) should ensure that they reach agreement on a code of conduct on publishing data by March 2011 and that they implement their commitments in full.” P.65
