‘The key word is transparency’ says Haitian Prime Minister
The Prime Minister of Haiti, Bellerive, has responded to the levels of aid pledged to rebuild the country with a commitment of his own. Acknowledging that Haiti has, ‘a credibility problem’, symptomatic of so many countries with less developed public infrastructures, he stresses the need to ‘prove to all the people we are working with that we have transparency … that we are working towards progress, really, and that everybody [understands] what we are going to do in the short- [and] mid-term, and that we are putting in place a system for accountability and evaluation.’
A transparent budget will promote successful development both now and in the future, allowing donors to plan projects and allocate resources to compliment and fill gaps in the Haitian government’s own spending.
