Haiti Reconstruction Platform will make aid more transparent
Today, April 23rd, sees the launch of a new online portal from the UN, The Haiti Reconstruction Platform, which will notably increase the transparency of aid spending in Haiti. Built with support from Development Gateway and Synergy International Systems, the site brings together information about the pledges made by donors and the national reconstruction plan, through to where resources will be directed to in the short and long-term, all in an accessible and comprehensive format.
Part of the United Nations Development Programme’s initiative to address management of external aid flows, the site promises to enable more effective spending of the US$9 bn aid pledged by donors for the country’s reconstruction.
Ernst Metellus, Coordinator for Information Management of Programmes and Projects with the Haitian Ministry of Planning and External Cooperation, said the the virtual platform aims to streamline government efforts to meet the needs of the Haitian people. "The success of this project will be measured in degree of transparency it presents and ultimately through ensuring every dollar given is leveraged to the maximum extent possible in helping us oversome this terrible tragedy."
